The John 13 Series (I): Love & Trust

Have you been in a situation where it seems like your world is upside down despite knowing you are in God’s will? I've been there and found it hard to keep calm or trust that everything would be fine. Towards Jesus’s death, there was some disturbance among his disciples; however, one person had a level of trust that made him calm despite all that occurred around him. Who was this🤔?

In John 13, at the last supper, Jesus disclosed that one of his disciples would betray him. Predictably, there was confusion among his disciples😵. They were suspicious and confused about whom that statement referred to. Amazingly, In the middle of all this, John was busy resting on Jesus’s chest, rather unbothered👀. Finally, to eradicate the disciples’ confusion, Peter signaled to John to ask Jesus who the betrayer was. John obeyed without shifting from his position of rest - leaning on Jesus (v25). What kind of man is this, that was unmoved by his surroundings and was at ease with Jesus?
What did he know that the others didn’t🤷?

John 13:23 gives us a hint: " the disciple whom Jesus loved”. John understood deeply that Jesus loved him, and he loved Jesus based on this understanding (that’s why he was the only central disciple at the cross). Therefore, based on John’s understanding of God’s love for him, He was certain that he could not be a partaker of whatsoever happenings around him that wasn’t consistent with the love story between him and Christ, for example, betrayal.  Perhaps that's why scriptures say in 1 John 4:18 that "No fear exists where HIS love is. Rather, perfect love gets rid of fear..." (GWT)

His understanding of Christ’s love led him to a degree of trust👨‍❤️‍👨 and realization of security💪 that couldn’t be upset by the happenings around him.

Personal Experience: March was one of the most stressful months of my life. I had a lot on my plate, and many unexpected things happened. It was like my world was turning upside down, and I found myself weak, thinking I couldn't achieve the things before me. However, since I realized the love-trust relationship, I often prayed for God's love to be revealed to me so that I may trust him more. Eventually, God still came through for me, and I achieved all that was before me and even more.

No wonder the Bible says in Isaiah 26:33 that God will keep men who trust Him in perfect peace. That kind of trust comes from a revelation and understanding of how Christ loves you❤️. Ever since I read that, my prayer has been that Christ should open my eyes to the height of love he has for me that will make me lean on him and be at ease, irrespective of what comes my way🙏. We can all be like John. All we need to do is ask.

Prayer: Lord, please reveal the dimension of your love to me that will make me trust you no matter what comes my way. 🙏

There's also a caution we must observe while trusting God. That will be the next blog post on the John 13 series. If you think you have an idea what it may be, put it in the comment section. I would love to hear from you all.
